Some 10 per cent of Slovakia's population are of Roma ethnicity - most are illiterate and live in poverty in the far east of the country. To combat the problem, the country's government has suggested a radical proposal - that Roma children be sent to boarding schools in an attempt to integrate them into Slovak society. The plan has already been condemned as illegal by human rights groups and the European union. Yet many in Slovakia see it as an essential measure to improve Roma standards of life. Al Jazeera's Laurence Lee reports from Rankovce. April 26 2010

Today is our first day in Bratislava, Slovakia. Excited to explore the city we aimed to find out whether Bratislava is worth visiting if you're visiting Europe? or whether you're thinking of visiting for a weekend break. These are our first impressions of Bratislava, having never been to the city or Slovakia in general prior to these videos. A brief history of Bratislava; Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, is set along the Danube River by the border with Austria and Hungary. It’s surrounded by vineyards and the Little Carpathian mountains, crisscrossed with forested hiking and cycling trails. The pedestrian-only, 18th-century old town is known for its lively bars and cafes. Perched atop a hill, the reconstructed Bratislava Castle overlooks old town and the Danube.
May 2003 Slovakia's Roma population has always had a difficult life. Regarded as culturally inferior, they are discriminated against at all levels. Now evidence suggests they are being sterilised against their will. Ingrid Ginova was just 16 when doctors sterilised her without her knowledge. When she publicised her plight, police threatened to imprison her. Her story gives added weight to a new report stating that Romany women have been sterilised for decades without their consent. Produced by SBS/Dateline Distributed by Journeyman Pictures

The European Roma Rights Centre (ERRC) have received video evidence of police officers attacking Roma at random in the street in Zborov, Slovakia. Police entered the Romani neighbourhood of Zborov on 16th April and began indiscriminately beating Roma, including children and elderly people.

On the first of January, Slovakia will start using the Euro. Slovakia has worked hard to fulfil the conditions laid down in the Maastricht Treaty, so that it can enter into the single European currency. In the capital Bratislava, the signs that Slovakia is about to join the Euro are everywhere. A massive Euro poster covers part of the central bank building. Every shop shows its prices in Euros as well as Korunas. The business world is positive about the change- exports inside the European Union won't carry the costs of currency exchange anymore, and book-keeping should get a lot easier. Travel video about destination Trnava in Slovakia. Trnava, in south west Slovakia, is well-protected by a three kilometre-long city wall. Under the protection of the sturdy wall, the monastery and church of Holy Jakobus were created in the fourteenth century with the support of the House Of Anjou. The monastery complex was then considered to be one of the largest religious buildings in the country and served as a place in which God could unite the world. The new city centre contains an imposing Neo-Classical theatre and a tower that was built in 1574. From a height of twenty-nine metres, those in the watchtower were able to warn of any threat of fire. The Jewish synagogue was built in 1831, badly damaged during the Second World War and then neglected for several decades. It now contains...

Travel video about destination Skanzen Pribylina in Slovakie. A tranquil scene at the foot of the High Tatra is the location of a museum village, reconstruction of which began in1972. Subsequently, Pribylina’s Liptov Village was inaugurated in 1991. With the creation of Slovakia’s largest lake nearby, a total of eight villages became partly submerged by water. The assembly of the buildings was typical of the municipality of Liptov, a fine example of which was the home of a minor nobleman from Parizoviec. Before the village was flooded, it was the oldest fourteenth century settlement that was inhabited by the important Parisa Family. In Gothic times, tall, spacious rooms were required by the aristocracy, who had a liking for draped walls. At that time, both tableware and dining furnitur...

Travel video about destination Banska Stiavnice in Slovakia. Banská Štiavnica is one of the most beautiful cities in Slovakia and whose historic buildings form its mediaeval centre. The old town, and silver mines of the surrounding area, have been designated as a World Cultural Heritage Site. The Kammer-Hof was created by the combination of three Gothic buildings during the sixteenth century. Up until the nineteenth century, the mining chamber and the first technical university in the world were located there. For the first time in this region a rib vault was raised in its construction and served as a model for further buildings. However, at the beginning of the nineteenth...

The Capital of the Slovak Republic Bratislava, also referred to as the Beauty on the Danube can not only boast interesting history but it also is the centre of the most dynamically developing region of central Europe at present. Slovakia is after Austria the second country in the middle Europe with the largest amount of forests? Almost 40% of its territory is covered by forest, while in Austria it is only 6% more. Bratislava and Vienna are two closest located capitals in Europe. There is only less than 60 km between them. According to some sources, the European geographical central point is considered to be near the roman-catholic church of St. John the Baptist above the village of Kremnické Bane. Slovakia has many winter resorts with beautiful natural views. Downhill skiers, snow...

The castle started out as a wooden stronghold sometime in the eleventh or twelfth century. It has been the subject of copious reconstructions to suit the tastes of its many patrons.
